You picture the jagged limestone towers piercing the Dolomite sky, the vibrant wildflowers, and the rewarding burn in your legs as you hike the classic loop.​But as we laced up our boots and hit the trails, we stumbled upon a side of these mountains that shifted our entire perspective. Beyond the natural beauty lies an open-air museum of one of the most brutal fronts of World War I.​Stepping Back to the Guerra Bianca (The White War)​Between 1915 and 1917, this exact paradise was a terrifying frontline. Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers faced off here in what became known as the White War.
